Rolling type product release in 2017
LG Electronics plans to release a ‘bendable’ smart phone as early as next year, according to sources.
Bendable smart phone is not curved as of a flexible smart phone ‘G Flex’ released by LG Electronics. It is flat as of ordinary smart phones, but can be bent freely when necessary. Offering both flat and curved shape, it provides a differentiated user experience (UX).
On the 12th, a U.S. IT medium Geeky ? Gadget showed roadmaps for several devices LG Electronics are developing at the moment and reported that the release of a bendable smart phone is scheduled for next year. According to the report, LG Electronics will release a bendable smart phone next year and even plans to release a rolling type smart phone, which is folded or rolled like a piece of paper, in 2017.
LG electronics’ bendable smart phone will be applied with a plastic organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel, according to sources. Plastic OLED is made with a plastic substrate instead of glass, and thus is thinner and more easily bended.
In November last year, LG Electronics released a vertically bending curved smart phone ‘G Flex.’ The bendable smart phone to be released next year is an upgraded model of G Flex.
As of now, it is highly likely for ‘G Flex 2,’ which LG Electronics is scheduled to release early next year, to be the bendable smart phone reported by the foreign press. According to the industry, G Flex 2, which is mounted with a plastic OLED panel, will be applied with flexible technology to bend a smart phone at a curvature required by the user.
The industry’s evaluation is that LG Electronics has secured a technology for curvature regulated panel application to not only TVs, but also smart phones. In fact, a bendable smart phone LG Electronics registered with the USPTO was made using shape memory alloy, and thus the curvature is changed freely according to electrical signals.
At this, an LG insider said, “We are not yet reviewing a bendable smart phone release.”

LG전자가 이르면 내년에 ‘구부러지는(벤더블) 스마트폰’을 출시할 계획인 것으로 알려졌다.
구부러지는 스마트폰은 LG전자가 선보인 플렉시블 스마트폰 ‘G플렉스’처럼 휘어진 모습이 아니라 일반 스마트폰처럼 평면이지만 필요에 따라 자유자재로 구부릴 수 있다. 사용자 선택에 따라 평면과 곡면으로 차별화된 사용자경험(UX)을 이용할 수 있다.
미국 IT매체 기키가젯은 12일 LG전자가 최근 개발 중인 몇몇 기기 로드맵을 공개했으며 내년 구부러지는 스마트폰 출시가 예정돼 있다고 보도했다. 보도에 따르면 LG전자는 내년 구부러지는 스마트폰을 출시한 후 오는 2017년 종이처럼 접거나 말아서 사용하는 롤링형 스마트폰 출시까지 계획하고 있다.
LG전자의 구부러지는 스마트폰에는 플라스틱 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 패널을 적용할 계획인 것으로 알려졌다. 플라스틱 OLED는 기판 소재를 유리에서 플라스틱을 바꾼 덕에 더 얇고 그만큼 더 구부리기 쉽다.
LG전자는 지난해 11월 세로로 휘어진 곡선 스마트폰 ‘G플렉스’를 출시했다. 내년 출시 예정인 구부러지는 스마트폰은 G플렉스에서 한 단계 진화한 모델이다.
현재로선 LG전자가 내년 초 공개 예정인 ‘G플렉스2’가 외신이 보도한 구부러지는 스마트폰이 될 가능성이 높다. 업계에 따르면 플라스틱 OLED 패널을 탑재한 G플렉스2는 사용자가 원하는 곡률에 맞게 스마트폰을 구부릴 수 있는 가변형 기술이 적용될 것으로 알려졌다.
LG전자가 TV는 물론이고 스마트폰에도 곡률 조절 패널을 탑재할 기술을 갖췄다는 것이 업계의 평가다. 실제로 지난 1월 LG전자가 미국 특허청에 등록한 구부러지는 스마트폰 관련 내용을 보면 형상기억합금을 사용해 전기신호에 따라 자유롭게 곡률을 변경할 수 있다.
이에 대해 LG전자 관계자는 “아직 벤더블 스마트폰 출시를 검토하고 있지 않다”고 밝혔다.
