Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics will be able to link smart home services of their home appliances.

Korea Association of Smart Home (KASH) announced on the 10th that it had recently held a board meeting and resolved a plan for ‘smart home standardization,’ which had been an obstacle in smart home industry activation.

The plan is to make smart home protocols of each company consistent so as to prevent suspension of smart home service when products from different manufacturers are used or the applied products are changed. Companies to participate in the standardization are home appliances, communications and home network companies, such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, KT, Samsung SDS, Kyungdong One, Kocom, Commax, Hyundai Telecom and RadioPulse, and construction companies, such as LH Korea and Samsung C&T Corporation.

First, a standard implementation promotion team will be organized for 13 wired smart home standard service protocols for which standardization has been completed. The promotion team will inspect the status of standard implementation and complete the standard application to products by June next year.

Wired smart home standard is promoted on the basis of RS485 communications protocol. With this agreement, linked service is maintained regardless of product manufacturers even when a door lock, a boiler, lighting, air conditioner system, a gas valve or remote detection system is replaced. Wireless-based smart home standard will be completed of development by August next year and application to products will be promoted until May 2016.

As for a smart home platform link standard to enable Internet of things (IoT) service, version 1.0 development will be promoted until the end of next year through cooperation of smart home service providers including home appliances and communications companies. For this, KASH will organize Smart Home Platform Committee with executives from home appliances companies and common carriers.

“Smart home platform is a field in which global companies are focusing their investments in an attempt to dominate standards by organizing consortiums. Development of this field will be accelerated in Korea following the agreement on the industry-led joint standardization promotion and application,” said KASH Chairman Hong Won-pyo (Samsung Electronics president). Chairman Hong emphasized, “We will lead the global standard as well by creating an open smart home ecosystem.”
