With the period of Chairman Lee Kun-hee’s hospitalization reaching the sixth month on the tenth of this month, Samsung Group is striving for governance restructuring and performance improvement in order to fight against management environment deterioration that is taking place across the world.
According to financial circles on the 5th, while Samsung Group is inevitably suffering an elongated absence of Chairman Lee despite its claiming that Chairman Lee’s condition is ‘improving,’ it is accelerating business restructuring and management innovation activities. Chairman Lee collapsed at his home in Itaewon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul on May 10 because of acute myocardial infarction and is currently hospitalized in Samsung Medical Center for medical treatment. It is being reported that Chairman Lee’s condition has improved enough for him to sit on a wheelchair assisted and that a plan to move him to receive treatment in his home is being examined.
Since Chairman Lee’s hospitalization, Samsung has been carrying out governance restructuring rapidly. Starting with the transfer of Cheil Industries’ Fashion Division to Samsung Everland last year, the company has been making swift decisions for Samsung SDS’ M&A with Samsung SNS, the selloff of Samsung Corning Precision Materials, merger between Cheil Industries’ Materials Division with Samsung SDI, the change of Samsung Everland’s company name and the merger between Samsung General Chemicals with Samsung Petrochemical. On the 14th of this month and the 18th of next month, Samsung SDS and Cheil Industries, the cores in Samsung’s governance, will be listed in the securities market. With securities market listing of the two companies, Samsung’s business restructuring will enter the final stage, according to financial circles.
As for the group management, Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong and Samsung Group’s control tower Future Strategy Office minimized the effects of Chairman Lee’s absence through active cooperation with affiliates. Samsung has also been executing aggressive investments, such as to make an investment of more than KRW 15 trillion in Pyeongtaek ? Godeok District Semiconductor Plant ahead of the initially set schedule. Centering on Samsung Electronics, it accelerated the discovering of next-generation income sources by embarking on aggressive M&As. As for the lawsuit with Apple, which had been continued for over three years, Samsung Group achieved a progress by deriving an agreement for withdrawal of patent suits in countries other than the U.S.
Recently, Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong’s aggressive movements are drawing attention. He met with China’s General Secretary Xi Jinping three times this year alone. This month, Vice Chairman Lee visited Beijing, China, met with Vice Premier Ma Kai, who is in charge of economics field for the Chinese government, and introduced Samsung’s business performances in China. Prior to this, Vice Chairman Lee met with Nguyen Phu Trong, the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (1st of last month) inside Samsung Office in Seocho-dong and reached an agreement on the establishment of a home appliances complex. In addition, he signed a contract to extend the term of Olympic sponsorship with President Thomas Bach of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Vice Chairman Lee also met with IT industry magnates. In July, he was spotted conversing with Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Larry Page at the Allen and Company Annual Media and Technology Conference held in the U.S. Last month, he met with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during his visit in Korea and discussed issues concerning patent disputes. In addition, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg visited Vice Chairman Lee in Samsung’s Seocho-dong office last month. Moreover, Vice Chairman Lee invited presidents of foreign financial companies to Samsung Group’s reception hall Seungjiwon in Itaewon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul for a banquet.
“There were concerns about Chairman Lee’s absence at the time he was taken into hospital. However, it is not as serious now,” said a Samsung Electronics executive. “Each business division has a responsible management system established. In addition, the group is controlling all divisions systematically. So, the organization is not faltering.”

이건희 회장 건강 쇼크 6개월…지배구조 개편 속 실적 만회 박차
이건희 회장이 오늘 10일로 입원 6개월째를 맞는 가운데 삼성그룹은 지배구조 개편 작업과 글로벌 경영환경 악화에 맞선 실적 개선에 안간힘을 쏟고 있다.
5일 재계에 따르면 삼성그룹은 이 회장 병세에 대해 ‘호전되고 있다’는 입장을 견지함에도 공백 장기화가 불가피한 것으로 파악되는 가운데 안팎으로 사업구조 개편과 경영쇄신 작업에 속도를 내고 있다. 이 회장은 지난 5월10일 서울 용산구 이태원동 자택에서 급성 심근경색을 쓰러졌으며 삼성서울병원에서 입원 치료를 받고 있다. 최근에는 주변 도움으로 휠체어에 앉을 수 있을 정도로 회복된 것으로 알려졌으며 자택 이동 치료를 검토하고 있다.
이 회장 입원 후 삼성은 지배구조 개편을 빠르게 진행하고 있다. 지난해 제일모직 패션사업부를 삼성에버랜드 양도를 시작으로 삼성SDS의 삼성SNS 흡수 합병, 삼성코닝정밀소재 매각, 제일모직 소재부문과 삼성SDI의 합병, 삼성에버랜드의 사명 변경, 삼성종합화학과 삼성석유화학의 합병 결정 등을 빠르게 결정했다. 이달 14일과 다음 달 18일에는 지배구조의 핵심인 삼성SDS와 제일모직이 유가증권시장에 상장한다. 두 회사의 상장으로 사업구조 재편 작업이 마무리 단계에 접어든 것으로 재계는 본다.
그룹 경영은 이재용 부회장과 컨트롤타워인 미래전략실이 계열사와의 적극적인 공조로 이건희 회장의 공백을 최소화했다. 15조원 이상이 투입되는 평택 고덕지구 반도체 공장 투자를 일정보다 앞당겨 실행에 옮기는 등 공격적 투자도 이어갔다. 삼성전자를 중심으로 공격적인 인수합병(M&A)에 나서는 등 차세대 먹거리 발굴에도 속도를 냈다. 3년 넘게 소송전을 벌여온 애플과도 미국을 제외한 국가에서 특허소송을 철회하기로 합의하는 등 진전을 이끌어냈다.
최근에는 이재용 부회장의 광폭 행보가 단연 눈길을 끈다. 시진핑 중국 국가주석과는 올 들어서만 세 차례 자리를 했다. 이달들어서도 중국 베이징을 찾아 정부에서 경제 분야를 맡고 있는 마카이 부총리를 만나, 삼성의 중국 내 사업현황을 소개했다. 앞서 베트남 최고지도자인 응웬 푸 쫑 당서기장(지난달 1일)을 삼성 서초사옥에서 만나 가전단지 건립 문제를 합의했으며, 토마스 바흐 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 위원장과는 올림픽 후원 연장 계약을 체결하기도 했다.
IT업계 거물과도 연쇄 회동했다. 지난 7월에는 미국에서 열린 앨런앤드코 미디어콘퍼런스에서는 팀 쿡 애플 CEO, 래리 페이지 구글 CEO와 함께 있는 모습이 포착됐으며 지난달에는 방한한 사티아 나델라 마이크로소프트(MS) CEO와 만나 특허분쟁 문제를 협의했다. 지난달에는 페이스북 CEO인 마크 저커버그가 서초사옥을 찾아 이 부회장과 자리를 가졌으며 삼성그룹 영빈관인 서울 용산구 이태원동 승지원에서 외국금융사 사장들을 초청해 만찬을 주재하기도 했다.
삼성전자 한 임원은 “이건희 회장 입원했을 당시만해도 공백 우려가 불거졌지만 지금은 체감할 수준은 전혀 아니다”며 “사업부별로 책임경영체제가 확실히 갖춰진데다가 그룹 차원에서 시스템적으로 컨트롤을 하고 있어 조직이 흔들리지 않는다”고 말했다.
