A small Korean company obtained patents for atmospheric pressure (AP) plasma generation device and technology using argon (Ar) gas in the U.S. and Japan. This company was recognized for its high technological power in the countries with advanced AP plasma technology. This is forecast to accelerate AP plasma generation device export to these areas, which has been insignificant so far.
On the 22nd, APPLASMA (CEO: Gang Bang-gwon), a company specializing in AP plasma generation equipments, announced that it had registered a patent for an ‘uniformed AP plasma generation device’ early last year in the U.S. and obtained another patent with the same technology in Japan recently.
This is the first instance where a Korean company registered a patent for AP plasma technology in Japan, the leader in the related technological fields. “It is extremely rare for a Korean company to obtain an AP plasma-related patent in Japan,” said an APPLASMA source. This source explained, “Our high technological power was recognized also in Japan.”
The AP plasma generation device using argon gas developed by APPLASMA generates plasma under atmospheric pressure. It then removes pollutants, moisture and statistic electricity from a display surface, such as of a touch panel, or chemically increases surface energy, and thus increases adhesive efficiency. Recently, this company is drawing attention by developing a display inorganic membrane (SION film) etching system using AP plasma and supplying it to LG Display.
Having obtained patents in the U.S. and Japan following China, APPLASMA anticipated that it would be able to start exporting to these countries.
In 2012, APPLASMA registered the related patents in China. Based on the patent registration, it is currently exporting an AP plasma cleansing equipment and a surface treatment device for coating to touch screen panel makers, such as Taiwan’s Young Fast and China’s Truly.
The effects of patent acquisition in the U.S. and Japan were produced immediately. First Solar, a photovoltaic power generation solution specialist in the U.S., came forward with an intention to purchase a photovoltaic module cleansing equipment using AP plasma. For this, an engineer recently visited APPLASMA and a test is scheduled to take place soon.
In Japan, large enterprises like Japan Display are conducting a test for application of the AP plasma cleansing equipment of their mass-production lines. APPLASMA has been supplying this product only in small quantities for research purposes to Sony and a touch panel maker Nissha. Following the test, APPLASMA’s product will be installed in mass-production lines.
“The fact that we have registered a patent in Japan, which is notorious for being strict about patent review means that our technological differentiation has been recognized,” said APPLASMA CEO Gang Bang-won. “We expect that our export volume will more than double from next year when the effects of patent registration are produced.” CEO Gang added, “We have been exporting cleaning equipments only. However, we plan to expand the export items to deposition and etching equipments.”

에이피피, 미국?일본서 대기압 플라즈마 발생장치 특허 잇따라 획득...수출 확대에 파란불
국내 중소기업이 미국과 일본에서 아르곤(Ar) 가스를 이용한 대기압 플라즈마 발생장치 기술로 특허를 획득했다. 대기압 플라즈마 선진국에서 높은 기술력을 인정받은 셈이다. 그동안 미미했던 이들 지역으로의 대기압 플라즈마 발생장비 수출에도 탄력이 붙을 것으로 기대된다.
대기압 플라즈마 장비 전문업체인 에이피피(대표 강방권)는 지난해 초 미국에서 ‘균일한 대기압 플라즈마 발생장치’ 특허를 등록한데 이어 최근 일본에서도 동일한 기술로 특허를 획득했다고 22일 밝혔다.
국내 기업이 대기압 플라즈마 기술 종주국이라고 할 수 있는 일본에서 관련 특허를 등록한 것은 이번이 처음이다. 회사 측은 “국내 기업이 일본에서 대기압 플라즈마 관련 특허를 획득한 것은 매우 이례적”이라며 “일본에서도 높은 기술력을 인정한 것”이라고 설명했다.
이 회사가 개발한 아르곤 가스를 이용한 대기압 플라즈마 발생장치는 대기압 상태에서 플라즈마를 발생시켜 터치패널 등 디스플레이 표면의 오염물질과 수분?정전기를 제거하거나 화학적으로 표면에너지를 높여 접착효율을 높여주는 장비다. 최근에는 대기압 플라즈마를 이용한 디스플레이 무기막(SION박막) 에칭 시스템도 개발, LG디스플레이에 공급해 주목받고 있다.
회사 측은 중국에 이어 미국과 일본에서도 관련 특허를 잇따라 획득함에 따라 이들 지역 수출에도 본격 나설 수 있게 될 것으로 기대했다.
에이피피는 지난 2012년 중국에서 관련 특허를 등록, 이를 토대로 대만 영페스트와 중국 트룰리 등 터치스크린 패널 기업에 대기압 플라즈마 세정장비와 코팅을 위한 표면처리장치 등을 수출하고 있다.
미국과 일본 특허 획득 효과는 곧바로 나타났다. 미국 태양광 발전 솔루션 전문업체인 퍼스트솔라가 대기압 플라즈마를 이용한 태양광 모듈 세정장비를 구매를 타진하고 나섰다. 이를 위해 최근 엔지니어가 에이피피를 방문, 테스트를 앞두고 있다.
일본에서도 재팬디스플레이 등이 대기압 플라즈마 세정장비를 양산라인에 적용하기 위해 테스트 진행 중이다. 에이피피는 그동안 일본 시장에는 소니와 터치패널 업체인 니샤 등에 연구용도로만 소량 공급했다. 테스트를 과정을 거친 후에는 양산라인에 설치할 예정이다.
강방권 에이피피 사장은 “특허 심사가 까다롭기로 소문난 일본에서 특허를 등록한 것은 기술의 차별성을 인정받은 것”이라며 “효과가 나타나는 내년부터는 수출도 두 배 이상 늘어날 것으로 기대한다”고 말했다. 그는 또 “그동안에는 세장장비만 수출해 왔는데 앞으로는 증착장비와 에칭장비로 수출 제품을 확대해 나갈 계획”이라고 덧붙였다.
