Attending is drawn to whether or not small and medium-scale fabless companies will be able to utilize Samsung Electronics’ 28 nanometer (nm) process line for mobile AP in their prototype development.

According to the industry on the 26th, Samsung Electronics and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) are promoting a plan to support domestic fabless companies for multi-project wafer (MPW) production in Samsung Electronics’ 28 nano process line where mobile application processors (AP) are produced. Following a demand survey targeting fabless companies, the project will be confirmed around December. Over the years, Samsung Foundry has been producing items centering on those available for mass-production in the 28 nano process line.

MPW is produced by designing several chips on a single wafer. It is mainly used for prototyping or R&D on chips. For a chip production, foundry’s design assets (IP) and design kits are necessary. Therefore, cooperation with a foundry is essential. MPW manufacturing is compulsory for cost reduction and fostering of design human resources.

Unlike in other foundries, it is virtually impossible to create prototypes from Samsung Electronics’ fab. Characteristically, fabless companies produce ‘multiple items in small quantities.’ However, from Samsung Electronics’ standpoint, it is inevitable to set a higher priority on reaching the break-even point through mass-production.

Fabless companies anticipate that, once Samsung Electronics 28 nano fab is opened, they will be able to drastically improve their competitive power in a variety of system semiconductor fields. To give the slip to Chinese fabless companies’ pursuit, these companies need to set prices at the same or a lower level than China while securing advanced technological and performance standards.

A fabless company CEO said, “Samsung Electronics’ fab is of the world’s top class. It certainly will be an advantage for us to create our prototypes using this line.”

“It is true that we are discussing the opening of 28 nano fab with Samsung Electronics. However, nothing has been finalized yet,” said an ETRI insider. “We will complete the discussion by December and announce the related details to fabless companies.”
