POSCO became the first in Korea to localize the high-corrosion-resistance stainless steel for the nuclear power plant condenser and entered into an agreement for the sale of first articles.

This product was developed by Prof. Park Yong-soo, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Yonsei University. As its anti-corrosion resistance is tens of times higher than general stainless steel, it does not corrode easily in a harsh environment.

As the process of manufacturing the high-corrosion-resistance stainless steel is very sophisticated, it has been produced by a few Japanese and European companies on a limited scale, and Korea has had to import all of it. As POSCO began commercial production of the high-corrosion-resistance stainless steel, the Korean steel-maker will substitute the expensive imported steel, and be able to get abreast of the leading steel companies in the world that have the highest level of technology. This steel is scheduled to be supplied first to United Arab Emirates (UAE) Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Unit 4, for which Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) won the contract.

Immediately after HHI won the contract for the UAE NPP Unit 4, POSCO planned to commercially produce a new steel that will substitute the expensive imported steel for the condensers used in NPPs together with the customer. To make a high-corrosion-resistance special alloy steel, the core technology was the control of trace elements. At POSCO, the researchers and engineers of the research center, the stainless steel production and sales departments and the Technical Solution Center worked together for a couple of years, and succeeded in producing the steel that customers want. This steel is expected to contribute to improving the original technology in Korea and increasing exports.

The high-corrosion-resistance stainless steel is a core material for energy power generation facilities, and its uses and demands are forecast to be expanded. It is increasingly used in the desulfurizers of high-efficiency thermal power plants and reverse-osmosis desalination plants as well as in the condensers of nuclear power plants. In response, POSCO is planning to diversify steels and develop and apply differentiated production technologies to secure world-best quality and cost competitiveness.
