A Korean venture firm developed a ‘universal compatible digital door lock’ that can be applied to any type of door.
‘AMADAS’ (CEO Park Eun-min), a specialist in digital door locks, is planning to release a digital door lock named the ‘Hybrid Handle Lock (HHL, photo).’ The company will soon produce the prototype and introduce this product to the market.
The most salient feature of this product is ‘compatibility.’ As the handle becomes the digital door lock, it will be possible to use the existing locking device to lock the door simply by replacing the handle. It is possible to use the locking device of the existing door and there is no fear of damaging the door, e.g. drilling a hole in the door. As it can be linked to smartphones via bluetooth, etc., public attention is drawn to the possibility of developing overseas markets in this area.
“Korean digital door lock technology is widely recognized around the world, but there has been a limit to expansion of the domestic and overseas market due to the fear of damaging the door and differences in specifications except for collective installation in apartments,” said Park Eun-min. “As HHL turns the existing door into a digital door lock if consumers replace the handle for themselves, the installation and distribution cost can be reduced as well.” Since it can be linked to smart devices via bluetooth, it will be possible to use the door more conveniently.
As the entire product is made of stainless steel, the likelihood of failure due to external shock has been reduced. There is little fear that the product may be broken by external shock, but its price will be lower than those of existing products in the market. The company is preparing various product groups including a jewelry lock taking advantages of the properties of materials. “We will capitalize on the two strengths to make inroads into overseas digital door lock markets,” said Ms. Park. “The perception of overseas consumers, who have been reluctant to install door locks, will change.”
AMADAS’ confidence stems from its CEO, Park Eun-min. Ms. Park, 28 years old, graduated from Seoul National University, majoring in metal craft, and understands metals very well. Also, as the company emphasizes R&D, though it is a venture firm, it established its own technology research center, and its researchers with master’s degrees are developing products. On top of that, the startup received support from the Korea Technology Finance Corporation and Industrial Bank of Korea, and reputable external agencies like the Seoul Regional Small and Medium Business Administration rated its performance as outstanding. Since its establishment in April, AMADAS has been faring well.
Park Eun-min said, “We will make ‘people-oriented innovative products’ that will reciprocate the help from many people.” To Ms. Park, who founded a startup alone after graduating from college, several agencies, financial institutions and the Korea IT Business Women’s Association have been greatly helpful to the company. Then, she emphasized that she would represent the digital door lock industry and take the initiative in developing overseas markets by ‘combining’ her own specialty (metal craft), the help from others, and the efforts of AMADAS employees.
AMADAS is planning to unveil products to meet customer needs even after the release of HHL. “The origin of the company name, ‘AMADAS,’ is a Latin word meaning the hardest and most beautiful diamond,” said Park Eun-min. “HHL will be the first convenient, yet solid digital door lock at a reasonable price.”

`만능 호환` 디지털 도어록, 국내 벤처기업 개발

디지털 도어록 전문기업 ‘아마다스’(대표 박은민)는 ‘하이브리드 핸들 록(HHL, 사진)’으로 이름 붙여진 디지털 도어록을 출시할 계획이다. 조만간 시제품 생산을 거쳐 시장에 선보일 계획이다.
이 제품의 가장 큰 특징은 ‘호환성’이다. 손잡이를 디지털 도어록이 되도록 만들어 손잡이 교체만으로도 기존 잠금장치를 활용해 문을 잠글 수 있기 때문이다. 기존 문에 사용되는 잠금장치를 그대로 쓸 수 있고, 문에 구멍을 뚫는 등 손상을 입힐 염려가 없다. 블루투스 등 스마트폰과 연동할 수도 있어 향후 이 분야 해외시장 개척도 주목된다.
박 대표는 “국내 디지털 도어록 기술이 세계적으로 널리 인정을 받고 있지만, 아파트 등 공동주택의 단체 설치 외에는 문 손상 염려와 규격 차이 등으로 국내외 시장 확대에 한계가 있었다”며 “HHL은 손잡이 자가 교체만으로 디지털 도어록이 돼 설치와 유통에 들어가는 비용도 줄일 수 있다”고 소개했다. 스마트 기기와의 블루투스 연동도 가능해 보다 편리한 문 이용도 가능하다.
제품 전체를 스테인리스 금속으로 제작해 외부충격에 의한 고장 우려도 줄였다. 외부충격에 의해 부러질 염려가 거의 없으면서도 가격은 기존 시중 제품보다 높지 않게 책정할 계획이다. 재질 특성을 활용한 주얼리록도 활용하는 등 다양한 제품군도 준비하고 있다. 박 대표는 “두 강점을 살려 해외 디지털 도어록 시장에서 승부를 띄우겠다”며 “도어록 설치를 꺼려했던 해외 소비자들의 인식이 바뀔 것”이라 말했다.
아마다스의 이러한 자신감은 박은민 대표와 궤를 같이한다. 올해 28세인 박 대표는 서울대학교에서 금속공예를 전공한 재원으로, 금속에 대한 이해도가 높다. 또 연구개발(R&D)에 중점을 둬 벤처이면서도 자체 기술연구소를 설립, 석사급 연구원들과 함께 제품을 개발하고 있다. 여기에 기술보증기금과 기업은행의 지원, 서울지방중소기업청 등 공신력 있는 외부기관으로부터의 우수한 경영평가까지 받으면서 4월 회사 설립 이래 순항할 수 있었다.
박 대표는 “많은 분들의 도움에 보답하는 ‘사람을 향하는 혁신적인 제품’을 만들겠다”고 했다. 대학 졸업 후 홀로 창업의 길로 나선 박 대표에게 여러 기관과 금융권, IT여성기업인협회 등 선배 경영자들의 도움이 회사 운영에 큰 도움이 됐기 때문이다. 이어서 자신의 전공(금속공예)과 주위의 도움, 아마다스 구성원들의 노력을 ‘융합’해 디지털 도어록 업계를 대표해 해외 시장 개척에 나서겠다고 강조했다.
아마다스는 HHL 출시 이후에도 고객의 요구에 따른 제품들을 선보일 계획이다. 박 대표는 “사명 ‘아마다스’의 뜻은 가장 견고하고 아름다운 다이아몬드의 라틴어 어원”이라며 “HHL부터 합리적인 가격에 편리하면서도 튼튼한 디지털 도어록을 출시할 것”이라고 말했다.
