SK Innovation is accelerating crude oil production volume expansion, such as by increasing production volume in the U.S. by 20% annually. In addition, the company will focus its competencies for resource development (E&P) business on unconventional resources centering on shale gas and oil in the U.S.
According to oil refining industry on the 13th, SK Innovation has established a goal to increase its crude oil production volume in the U.S., which is currently 4000 barrels per day, by 20% each year. Having taken over mines in Oklahoma and Texas, SK will promote production volume expansion through drilling in order to prepare a foothold for growth on land. It will also commence an operation to increase production volume and decrease production cost by developing new technologies. The policy is to improve competitiveness by increasing production volume and decreasing cost and, ultimately, to expand its base in the U.S. market.
The mine in Oklahoma, in particular, is anticipated of production volume increase. The productive stratum in this mine is called ‘Mississippian Lime.’ In the past, the rate to recover natural resources (total reserves) from original reserves was only around 3%. However, it has increased to 6% with technological advancement. It is also anticipated that a two-digit recovery rate will be achieved in the near future.
The company plans to expand its business in line with the boom of unconventional resource development, such as shale gas, to begin in China, Australia, South America and Europe following the U.S. The plan is to secure a foundation for entry to unconventional resource development in other regions by building up technological power and expertise in the currently secured U.S. mines and also to participate in investments actively when the time comes.
SK has changed the direction of its resource development business to unconventional resources because of the global petroleum development trend where exploration of conventional resources is becoming more and more difficult. As the success rate and scale are lowering, a greater depth is required for drilling and the related cost has also increased. On the other hand, for unconventional resources, the production volume increase rate is stably maintained and even is forecast to increase further. SK decided to turn to unconventional resource development in order to join in the megatrend in resource development.
SK has been accelerating ‘resource territory’ expansion according to Chairman Choi Tae-won’s management strategy to suggest resource development as an axis of the company’s future growth engine. “To do petroleum development properly, we must produce significant outcomes in the U.S., the chief seat of petroleum development business.” According to Chairman Choi’s encouragement, SK has been continuously strengthening its resource development business in the U.S. since the participation in a gas field exploration project in Louisiana in 2005. The company plans to increase competitiveness for resource development business in the U.S. market and also to upgrade its competencies for unconventional resource development, such as shale gas, in the long run.
“The shale gas development boom that started in the U.S. is spreading across the world,” said SK Innovation Vice Chairman Gu Ja-yeong during his recent visit to SK E&P America. “To prepare for new business opportunities, we will develop SK E&P America into our global advance base for the development of unconventional resources, such as shale gas.”
Unconventional Resource: This refers to resources produced through horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing of reservoir as production in the conventional method is difficult due to low transmittance and high viscosity. Shale gas/ oil, tight gas/ oil, oil sand and extra heavy oil are categorized as unconventional resources.

SK이노베이션, 미국 자원개발 고삐...비전통자원 집중
SK이노베이션이 미국에서 생산하는 원유량을 매년 20%씩 늘리는 등 생산량 확대에 박차를 가한다. 아울러 미국 셰일가스?오일을 중심으로 자원개발(E&P)사업을 비전통자원 분야에 집중한다.
13일 정유업계에 따르면 SK이노베이션은 일산 4000배럴인 미국지역 원유 생산량을 매년 20%씩 늘려나간다는 목표를 세웠다. 미국 오클라호마와 텍사스 두 지역 광구를 인수한 SK는 육상지역에서 성장할 수 있는 발판을 마련하기 위해 시추를 통한 생산량 증대를 추진한다. 새로운 기술을 개발해 생산량 증대와 생산비용을 줄이는 작업도 병행한다. 생산량도 늘리고 비용도 낮춰서 경쟁력을 키우고 궁극적으로 미국 내에서 입지를 확장한다는 방침이다.
특히 오클라호마 광구 생산량 증대를 기대하고 있다. 이 광구 생산층은 ‘미시시피안 라임’이라는 층인데 과거에는 전체 원시 매장량 중에서 부존량(전체 매장량) 회수율이 3% 밖에 못미쳤으나 기술이 발달하면서 6%까지도 진행 중이며 머지않아 두 자릿수 회수율도 가능할 것으로 예상되기 때문이다.
미국 사업을 필두로 중국, 호주, 남미, 유럽 등 지역에서도 시작될 셰일가스 등 비전통 자원 개발 붐에 편승해 사업을 확대해 나간다는 계획이다. 현재 보유한 미국 광구에서 기술과 노하우를 축적해 다른 지역 비전통자원 개발 사업에 뛰어들 수 있는 발판을 마련하고, 투자할 타이밍이 오면 적극 참여하겠다는 것이다.
SK가 자원개발 사업 방향을 비전통자원으로 전환한 것은 글로벌 석유개발 트렌드가 전통자원 탐사 쪽은 점점 어려워지고 있기 때문이다. 성공률이 낮아지고 규모가 작아지는 추세로, 점점 깊어지고 시추 관련 비용도 높아졌다. 반면에 비전통자원은 생산량 상승률이 떨어지지 않고 안정적으로 유지되고 있는데다 더 늘어날 전망이다. 자원개발 메가트렌드에 합류하기 위해 비전통자원 개발 쪽으로 방향을 잡은 것이다.
SK는 자원개발사업을 미래 성장동력의 한 축으로 제시한 최태원 회장 경영 전략에 따라 ‘자원 영토’ 확장에 박차를 가해왔다. “석유 개발을 제대로 하려면 본고장인 미국에서 유의미한 성과를 내야 한다”는 최 회장 독려에 따라 2005년 루이지애나주 가스전 탐사 사업에 참여한 것을 시작으로 꾸준히 미국 자원개발사업 강화를 도모했다. 앞으로 미국 시장에서 자원개발사업 경쟁력을 높인 뒤 장기적으로 셰일가스 등 비전통자원 개발 역량도 키워나갈 계획이다.
구자영 SK이노베이션 부회장은 최근 SK E&P 아메리카를 방문해 “미국에서 시작한 셰일가스 개발 붐이 세계 각지로 확산되고 있다”며 “새로운 사업 기회에 대비해 미국 석유개발 법인을 셰일가스 등 비전통자원 개발사업 글로벌 전초기지로 발전시키겠다”고 말했다.
비전통자원=낮은 투과도와 높은 점성도로 인해 전통적인 방법으로 생산이 어려운 저류층을 수평 시추와 수압 파쇄를 통해 생산하는 자원을 말한다. 셰일가스?오일, 타이트가스?오일, 오일샌드, 초중질유 등이 이에 해당한다.
