Shin Jong-gyun, CEO of the IM Division, Samsung Electronics (SEC), emphasized that smartphone H/W innovation is still effective at a press conference before the Galaxy S5 Unpack event. However, the H/W innovation of the Galaxy S5 disclosed that day did not meet expectations. It appears that SEC intentionally hid its ‘hidden card (hardware innovation),’ such as the application processor (AP) and QHD.
The strategies the company can use in the future are two-fold: to release the Galaxy S5 Premium (tentative) model or introduce a new series equivalent to the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Note series.
As a matter of fact, SEC began to develop the new premium series (tentatively named Galaxy F), which will succeed to the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note, last year. Over the years SEC has dominated the premium smartphone marker with the Galaxy S series in the first half, and with the Galaxy Note series in the second half. However, as the smartphone product cycle has become shorter, it is difficult to keep the market interested with two series for a year. It is anticipated that, if the Galaxy F is a medium-sized hit or better, it will fill the void between the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Note series.
SEC formed the ‘F Project’ Team last year to develop a new premium smartphone. Noh Tae-moon, VP, Advanced HW Development Team, Wireless Business Division, who played a leading role in developing the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Note series, was deeply involved in the F Project. Mr. Noh led the K Project of the Galaxy S5 Development Team.
At first, the Galaxy F was known to come with a 16 mega pixel camera module and a metal case. However, in the process of developing the Galaxy S5, it appears that H/W distribution was redone. To stress its difference from the Galaxy S5, the Galaxy F is expected to be equipped with a 16 mega pixel camera module and the Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) function.
It is also possible that a metal case will be applied. SEC has used plastic cases for its premium model too, but it has been limited in implementing a luxurious design. As the Galaxy S5 realized the feel of leather with a composite material, a metal case is highly likely to be applied to the Galaxy F.
“As the metal case supply chain is not complete yet, it is difficult to meet demands as big as those of the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Note series,” said industry sources. “If the new series comes with metal, it will be possible to release it without any burden on the supply chain and see how the market responds.”

갤S?노트 사이 출시 공백 메꿀듯
신종균 삼성전자 IM부문 사장은 갤럭시S5 언팩 행사에 앞선 기자간담회에서 스마트폰 하드웨어 혁신이 여전히 유효하다고 강조했다. 하지만 이날 공개한 갤럭시S5의 하드웨어 혁신은 기대에 못미쳤다. 의도적으로 애플리케이션프로세서(AP)?초고선명(QHD) 디스플레이 등 ‘히든 카드(하드웨어 혁신)’를 감춰 둔 것으로 보인다.
향후 삼성전자가 취할 수 있는 전략은 두 가지로 집약된다. 갤럭시S5 프리미엄(가칭) 모델을 출시하거나 갤럭시S?갤럭시노트 시리즈에 버금가는 새로운 시리즈를 선보이는 것이다.
실제로 삼성전자는 지난해 갤럭시S와 갤럭시노트를 이을 새로운 프리미엄 시리즈(가칭 갤럭시F) 개발에 착수한 바 있다. 그동안 삼성전자는 상반기 갤럭시S 시리즈, 하반기 갤럭시노트 시리즈로 프리미엄 스마트폰 시장을 주도했다. 그러나 스마트폰 제품 주기가 짧아지면서 1년에 두 개 시리즈로 시장의 관심을 잡아두기 어려워졌다. 갤럭시F가 ‘중박’ 이상의 히트만 쳐도 갤럭시S와 갤럭시노트 시리즈 사이의 공백을 메울 것으로 기대된다.
삼성전자는 지난해 새로운 프리미엄 스마트폰 개발을 위한 ‘F프로젝트’팀을 구성했다. 갤럭시S와 갤럭시노트 시리즈 개발 주역인 노태문 무선사업부 HW 선행개발 부사장이 깊이 관여했다. 노 부사장은 갤럭시S5 개발팀 K프로젝트를 주도한 인물이다.
당초 갤럭시F에는 1600만화소 카메라모듈과 금속 케이스 등이 탑재될 것으로 알려졌다. 그러나 갤럭시S5 개발 과정에서 새로운 하드웨어 배분이 이뤄진 것으로 보인다. 갤럭시F는 갤럭시S5와 차별점을 강조하기 위해 1600만화소 카메라모듈과 함께 손떨림 보정(OIS) 기능이 장착될 것으로 예상된다.
메탈 케이스를 적용할 가능성도 있다. 그동안 삼성전자는 프리미엄 모델에도 플라스틱 케이스를 썼지만 고급스러운 디자인을 구현하는데 한계가 있었다. 갤럭시S5에는 복합소재로 가죽 느낌을 구현한 만큼 갤럭시F에는 메탈 케이스가 적용될 가능성이 크다.
업계 관계자는 “메탈 케이스 서플라이체인이 아직 완전하지 않아 갤럭시S?갤럭시노트 시리즈처럼 많은 물량을 감당하기는 어렵다”며 “새로운 시리즈에 메탈을 장착한다면 공급망 부담 없이 출시해 시장 반응을 볼 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.
