‘To build strong appeal to consumers,’ a key task for the next model

Curved smartphones, which demonstrate the evolution of display technology, are not being received favorably in the market. They are failing to lead changes in the purchasing patterns of consumers who are accustomed to the existing flat smartphones. As the evolution to flexible display is a technological trend, it has become a key task for the next smartphone models to build stronger appeal to consumers.

According to the communications industry on the 11th, Samsung Electronics’ ‘Galaxy Round’ and LG Electronics’ ‘G Flex’ are displaying slow sales.

Since release, the daily average service openings of G Flex and Galaxy Round have been recorded as approximately 500 and 150 phones. These figures fall short of the daily average opening of general terminals, which is approx. 1,000 phones, in Korea’s smartphone market. There is a huge difference from the daily opening amount of strategic smartphones ranging from over 5,000 to maximum 10,000.

Despite the unfavorable response in the market, curved smartphones are evaluated highly in terms of the degree of technological completeness.

“There are many misconceptions about curved display. It is not just a marketing trick,” explained Displaymate CEO Raymond Soneira about Galaxy Round. “This is a very important technology for the hand-held smartphones and a new display technology innovation.”

G Flex was also favorably received by a number of overseas media. In particular, Engadget evaluated, “The strength of curved screen is the excellent viewing angle. When laid down, G Flex produces a very impressive viewing angle.”

In the end, it is analyzed that the slow sales of curved smartphones, despite their excellent performances and high levels of completeness, have been resulted by their failure of not appealing successfully to consumers.

“Consumers’ interest in curved smartphones is high. However, it does not successfully lead to purchases,” explained a common carrier insider. “It seems that curved smartphones are failing to display enough strength to overcome the trend of consumers accustomed to the existing flat smartphones.”

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics plan to continuously release curved smartphones from the perspective of display evolution regardless of market responses. Accordingly, it is crucial for them to develop their next curved smartphone models with stronger appeal to consumers.

“As electric vehicle or hydrogen vehicle sales are not compared with those of general gasoline cars, curved smartphone sales must not be regarded from the same view point as of existing smartphones,” said an LG Electronics insider. “It is evaluated that G Flex is producing outcomes in the domestic curved smartphone market and we will continue to expand overseas market entry.”
