Samsung Electronics is troubled by the unstable supply and demand of the OIS AF actuator for smartphone117 cameras. Samsung Electronics tried to implement the OIS function in the Galaxy Note 3, but postponed it to after the release of the Galaxy S5. However, as there are an insufficient number of OIS AF actuator suppliers, it seems that the company will adopt it in the Galaxy series in the second half of next year at the earliest.
According to the industry on November 28, the Wireless Business Division of Samsung Electronics is considering putting off the plan to apply the OIS function to smartphone from April 2014 to sometime after June 2014.
The number of domestic suppliers of the OIS AF actuator is absolutely insufficient, and the production yield is low too. As things are now, Samsung Electronics is not very likely to adopt the OIS function to its flagship models, such as the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note. “Competitors have already adopted the OIS function for smartphones, and are using it as a marketing point,” said a Samsung insider. “Even if we apply it to our flagship models notwithstanding higher costs, people will suspect that we are imitating our competitors.”
Samsung Electronics originally thought of introducing the OIS function to the Galaxy Note 3, but postponed it until after next year. In the meantime, LG Electronics commercialized the OIS function in its G2 ahead of Samsung Electronics. LG Electronics is known to have paid attention to OIS supply and demand by investing in the capital expenditure of Japan’s Mitsumi. LG Electronics is using the OIS function of the G2 camera as a marketing point to enhance the premium brand image.
Adopting the OIS function is a thumb in the eye from the viewpoint of smartphone design. Samsung Electronics is applying a very thin (7~8㎜) design to its flagship models.
But the OIS function will create a problem with the thin design. Currently the OIS is implemented by mounting a dedicated system semiconductor on the AF actuator. The problem is that, if the system semiconductor is added to the AF actuator, it will be difficult to make the camera module thin, and there will be a problem with power efficiency as well. At this time the AF actuator module design technology is important. It is common knowledge that there are not many competitive suppliers in Korea.
Samsung Electronics is shifting its focus to increasing the number of pixels of the camera module. It is known that Samsung Electronics will adopt the 16-mega pixel camera module to 25% of the smartphones it will release next year. One out of four Samsung smartphones will come with the 16-mega pixel camera module. Considering that the largest consumer electronics company in Korea plans to ship 360 million smartphones next year, the demands for the 16-mega pixel camera modules will amount to 181 million units.
“Currently LG Electronics’ G2 and Nokia Lumina 925 are the only models with the OIS camera,” said an industry insider. “Depending on how many Samsung smartphones will have the OIS function, the domestic AF actuator market will see many changes.”

삼성전자, 스마트폰 카메라 손떨림보정(OIS) 기능 채택…내년 하반기 이후로
삼성전자가 스마트폰 카메라용 손떨림 방지(OIS) 자동초점(AF) 액추에이터 수급 불안으로 골머리를 앓고 있다. 갤럭시노트3에 OIS 기능을 장착하려다 갤럭시S5 출시 이후로 일정을 미뤘다. 그러나 OIS AF 액추에이터를 공급할 협력사가 부족해 내년 하반기에나 갤럭시 시리즈에 채택할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.
28일 업계에 따르면 삼성전자 무선사업부는 스마트폰에 OIS 기능을 적용하는 계획을 내년 4월에서 6월 이후로 재연기하는 방안을 검토 중이다.
국내에서 OIS AF 액추에이터를 공급할 협력사수가 절대적으로 부족한데다 생산 수율마저 저조한 탓이다. 현재 분위기로는 삼성전자가 갤럭시S?갤럭시노트 등 플래그십 모델에 OIS를 채택할 가능성은 높지 않을 것으로 보인다. 삼성 관계자는 “이미 경쟁사들이 OIS 기능을 스마트폰에 채택해 마케팅 포인트로 활용하고 있다”며 “원가 상승을 감수하면서 플래그십 모델에 적용해도 경쟁사를 따라한다는 눈총을 받을 수도 있다”고 말했다.
삼성전자는 당초 갤럭시노트3에 OIS 도입을 검토하다가 내년 이후로 연기했다. 그 사이 LG전자가 G2에 OIS 기능을 먼저 상용화했다. LG전자는 일본 미쓰미에 설비 투자를 하는 등 OIS 수급에 신경을 쓴 것으로 알려졌다. LG전자는 G2 카메라의 OIS 기능을 마케팅 포인트로 활용해 프리미엄 브랜드 이미지를 높이고 있다.
스마트폰 디자인 측면에서도 OIS를 채택하는 것은 고민이다. 삼성전자는 플래그십 모델에 7~8㎜ 수준의 얇은 디자인을 적용하고 있다.
그러나 OIS를 적용하면 얇은 디자인을 구현하는데 문제가 생긴다. 현재 OIS는 AF 액추에이터에 전용 시스템반도체를 탑재하는 방식으로 구현된다. 문제는 시스템반도체가 AF 액추에이터에 추가되면 카메라모듈을 얇게 만들기 어렵고, 전력 효율 문제도 발생한다. 이 때 AF 액추에이터 모듈 설계 기술이 중요한데 국내에서는 경쟁력 있는 협력사가 많지 않은 것으로 알려졌다.
삼성전자는 카메라모듈 화소를 높이는 쪽으로 방향을 맞추고 있다. 내년 출시할 스마트폰 중 25%에 1600만 화소 카메라 모듈을 채택할 것으로 알려졌다. 삼성전자 스마트폰 4대 중 하나는 1600만 화소 카메라모듈이 장착된다. 내년 삼성전자 스마트폰 출하 목표가 3억6000만대인 것을 감안하면 1600만 화소 카메라모듈 수요는 1억8100만대에 이른다.
업계 관계자는 “현재 OIS 카메라가 탑재된 모델은 LG전자 G2, 노키아 루미아925 정도에 불과하다”며 “삼성전자가 스마트폰에 OIS를 얼마나 적용하는지에 따라 국내 AF 액추에이터 시장 판도가 결정될 것”이라고 말했다.
