KARI to showcase KARISMA at the Seoul ADEX 2013

A festival of state-of-the-art aerospace technology will be held offering a demonstrative flight of new-concept unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and programs of lunar exploration with official participation by NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States.

Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI, President: Kim Seung-jo) will showcase and exhibit its advanced aerospace technologies at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition 2013 (Seoul ADEX 2013) to be held for five days from October 29 to November 3 in Kintex, Ilsan under the theme, “Aerospace Industry for Creative Economy of the Future.”

The first program is a demonstrative flight of the new-concept UAVs applied with state-of-the-art aerospace technologies.

Nine compact UAVs controlled with the computer will perform a group dance flight to music. For this, a navigation technology for precision flight is applied with which several UAVs can simultaneously administer collision-free flights within a limited space. This is a core technology that can be used in the era of PAV (personal air vehicle) in the future.

A demonstrative flight of uniquely shaped flight vehicles, such as a drone carrier (unmanned carrier) to transport a number of compact UAVs like an aircraft carrier, a flying ball, a flying car, a flying saucer and a cyclocopter, will also be staged.

KARI and NASA will jointly operate the Lunar Exploration Hall where a lunar module ground pilot model and the models of a lunar orbiter and a lunar module to be used in the Korean lunar exploration will be exhibited.

In particular, NASA, which is engaged in a cooperative promotion of lunar exploration, will introduce its latest lunar science achievements through exhibits relating to LADEE, a lunar probe launched last month.

In the Lunar Exploration Hall, spectators can enjoy watching a 3D movie on lunar exploration, experience lunar exploration through augmented reality, try out Rover operation to explore the surface of the moon and play Astronauts’ Duties puzzles.

KARI will introduce KARI Solutions, a catalog outlining Korean satellite and the related technologies for domestic satellite industry activation and export promotion. In addition, KARI will showcase KSDS (KARI Satellite Design System) to improve Korea’s satellite design and analysis capacities.

KARI Solutions comprehensively offer key technologies developed through satellite development projects in Korea as well as the related key products and service information.

It contains information about key ground station products including 54 satellite models (by weight, duty and use), of which domestic companies can lead development, and antennas for satellite operation as well as satellite assembly and test services using advanced facilities and technological power and various high-quality satellite imaging information services.

KARI independently developed KSDS (KARI Satellite Design System) by integrating various fields required in satellite design and analysis on the basis of its experiences to develop working satellites in the last 20 years. Based on GUI (graphic user interface), pre and post-processing functions necessary for 3D satellite model creation and various analyses (satellite orbit simulation, thermal modeling, space radiation analysis, pollution analysis, power analysis, communication link analysis and solar cell performance deterioration analysis) are applied. Therefore, KSDS enables efficient satellite design in a short period of time.

KARI also plans to introduce KARISMA, a space debris collision risk management system. KARISMA aims at safely protecting Korean satellites from the risks of space junk and artificial space debris, which has emerged as a subject of interest with the recent release of a movie ‘Gravity.’

Seoul ADEX 2013 will introduce Korea’s advanced aerospace technologies also by exhibiting KOMPSAT ? 3 and 5 (Korea Multipurpose Satellite), high-tech earth observation satellites, an independently developed Korean style launch vehicle together with its 75-ton level engine and key components, an electrically powered UAV capable of long-term high-altitude and hot-temperature operation, the world’s first tilt-rotor type smart UAV, key components of a Korean style helicopter Surion and human powered aircraft (HPA).
