Smart TV operators, who opted for open-source HTML5 in order to avoid dependence on Google, have bumped into an obstacle - YouTube. As Google requires HTML5-based smart TV operators to go through “browser conformity tests” before they use the YouTube app, smart TV operators argue that their autonomy in designing app layouts and deciding launch dates are being violated.

According to industry insiders, Google has demanded HTML5-based smart TV operators should place the YouTube app on the main service page and pass Google US headquarters’ smart TV browser conformity tests.

The relevant industry is criticizing Google’s such rules as a violation of their right of choice. Smart TV operators have opted for HTML5 to escape from the clout of Android-based Google TV, so Google’s new requirements put brakes on HTML5-based smart TV operators.

An industry insider said, “Telling us where the YouTube app should be placed is an act of coercive sales tactics.”

Besides, it will take up to several months before a smart TV operator gets browser conformity certification from Google, so the launch of a new product will be delayed accordingly.

Samsung Electronics is also known to have waited for 3 months to get YouTube conformity certification.

In response to such controversies, a YouTube spokesperson said in an email statement, “YouTube is already bringing HTML5-based apps to TV devices from industry leaders, to make YouTube fast, easy to access and enjoyable for our shared users. We work closely with hardware and IPTV providers around the world to create the best experience for their users, by certifying the technology within days or weeks and encouraging them to include YouTube in the first group of apps they offer.”

"To make YouTube easy to access, we encourage providers to offer YouTube among the "first group of apps" shown to their users, not the first screen of the TV.The app certification process is a technology, not a content, certification, and without errors can be completed in as little as a couple days or as long as a few weeks. This is a standard practice across the app and smart TV industries."
