According to the industry on the 13th, Samsung Display is to supply 7.9-inch retina display with 2048×1536 resolution and 9.7-inch narrow bezel retina display to Apple from the 3rd and 4th quarters, respectively.
Each displays are to be used for iPad Mini 2 (Retina) and New iPad 5. Apple is to launch iPad Mini 2 of which resolution is upgraded to QXGA quality in the 3rd quarter, and is also preparing iPad 5 with narrow bezel for enhanced recognition degree.
As the relationship between the two companies seems to have been improved, the panels from Samsung Display are expected to be used for future new products of Apple. Since the retina version of New iPad, Samsung Display had been sidelined from Apple’s new product development projects, allegedly because of Samsung’s lawsuit against Apple and Cooks reshuffle of supply chain.
However, the relationship seems to have been restored after Apple suffered from the yield and quality problems that bogged Sharp of Japan and AUO of Taiwan.
LG Display had been consistently increasing its supply to Apple and expected to remain as the first vendor of Apple. However, as Samsung Display started to supply its products for Apple’s new products for the second half this year, the competition between two major display suppliers is expected to get more intense.
NPD Display Search, a market research firm, anticipated that the demand for display created by iPad Mini 2 this year will reach 15 million units, and LG Display, Samsung Display and Sharp are expected to supply 7, 5 and 3 million units, respectively.
삼성디스플레이, 미니 레티나에 이어 아이패드5용 LCD도 공급.. 애플과의 관계 급호전
삼성디스플레이가 애플이 3분기에 출시할 `아이패드 미니2`에 이어 연말에 내놓을 `뉴아이패드5`용 LCD 패널도 공급한다. 삼성전자와 애플의 특허 공방으로 한동안 소원했던 양사의 관계가 급호전되면서 그 배경에 관심이 쏠린다.
13일 업계에 따르면 삼성디스플레이는 2048×1536 해상도의 7.9인치 레티나 디스플레이를 3분기부터, 내로 베젤의 9.7인치 레티나 디스플레이를 4분기부터 순차적으로 애플에 공급한다. 각각 아이패드 미니2(레티나)와 뉴아이패드5용 디스플레이로 탑재된다. 애플은 3분기 해상도를 QXGA급으로 업그레이드한 아이패드 미니2를 내놓을 예정이며, 베젤을 줄여 시인성을 높인 아이패드5도 준비 중이다.
두 회사의 관계가 개선되면서 향후 애플의 신제품에도 계속 삼성디스플레이 패널이 적용될 것으로 관측된다.
삼성디스플레이는 레티나 버전의 뉴아이패드를 끝으로 1년 넘게 애플의 신제품 개발 프로젝트에서 배제됐다. 애플과의 소송 영향을 받은데다 팀 쿡 CEO의 공급망 재정비 정책까지 겹쳐진 탓이었다. 9.7인치 레티나 디스플레이 공급량이 줄었던 것도 이러한 영향 때문으로 풀이된다.
하지만 삼성디스플레이를 대체해온 일본 샤프와 대만 AUO의 수율?품질 문제가 일어나면서 협력 관계가 다시 복원된 것으로 보인다. 샤프는 산화물(옥사이드) 기판의 수율 문제로 지난 1분기 LCD 패널을 거의 공급하지 못했다. AUO 역시 아이패드 미니 공급 초기 품질 문제를 겪은 바 있다.
업계 관계자는 “새롭게 진행된 프로젝트에서는 한동안 삼성디스플레이가 모두 빠져있었다”며 “하지만 최근 신제품 개발에 삼성디스플레이가 다시 합류했다”고 말했다.
꾸준하게 공급량을 늘려온 LG디스플레이는 앞으로도 제1 협력사의 입지를 유지할 것으로 예상된다. 아이패드 미니2나 뉴아이패드5에 들어가는 패널도 LG디스플레이가 우선적으로 공급한다. 그러나 하반기부터 삼성디스플레이 패널이 신제품에 채택되기 시작하면서 향후 두 회사의 경쟁 구도가 그려질 전망이다.
시장조사업체 NPD디스플레이서치는 올해 아이패드 미니2 패널 공급량을 1500만대로 점쳤다. 이 가운데 LG디스플레이가 700만대, 삼성디스플레이가 500만대, 샤프가 300만대를 각각 차지할 것으로 예측했다.
데이비드 셰 NPD디스플레이서치 부사장은 “애플 아이패드가 태블릿PC 시장에서 확고한 리더인데다 까다로운 품질을 요구하는 만큼 비교적 패널 가격도 높게 매긴다”며 “패널업체들이 애플에 신경을 많이 쓰는 이유”라고 설명했다.
