The government held the 125th Free Economic Zone Committee and resolved three issues in writing, including changes to the development plan for the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Sepoong Industrial Complex.

The government has approved the change of the Free Economic Zone development plan so that the industrial complex will develop into an innovative ecosystem for the functional materials industry such as secondary batteries in connection with the chemical material industry that runs from the Sepoong Yeosu National Industrial Complex in Gwangyang Bay Area to the Yulchon 1 Industrial Complex.

Yulchon 1 Industrial Complex has been sold where the secondary battery cathode material production anchor company moved in, and as demand for occupancy is expected to move to the nearby Sepoong Industrial Complex in the future, the electric equipment manufacturing industry has been selected as a key attraction industry for small and medium-sized enterprises related to secondary batteries.

By expanding the functions of the Korea Testing & Research Institute (KTR), it will provides high-quality corporative support services such as commercialization core technology research & development (R&D), test analysis, patent application/registration, and certification acquisition for innovative material companies. In addition, it is planned to improve the convenience of participating companies so that the Sepoong Industrial Complex can be activated early.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy expects that the Sepoong Industrial Complex will serve as a forward base for the Gwangyang Bay Area to transform from the existing general-purpose chemical material center to a high value-added secondary battery and functional chemical material.

The Seonwol High Park Complex in the Gwangyang Bay Area was approved the change of the development plan so that an effective residential area can be created by reflecting the new residential demand (planned population of 140,000) following the development and occupancy of the Yulchon Industrial Complex and the Sepoong Industrial Complex. The Dowoo Leisure Complex was approved the change of the development plan to create a stay-type complex tourism/leisure park and theme village in line with the changing tourism trend, and to prepare the settlement conditions according to the development of the Hadong district.

Seon-gil Ahn, head of the Free Economic Zone Planning Division of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, said, “About 700 companies have moved into the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone, achieving annual sales of about 8 trillion KRW, . It will emerge and lead the development of the region, and with this development plan change, it will emerge as a major production base for the secondary battery industry, where global demand is rapidly increasing, and lead regional development.”
