The South Korean Government is going to establish a medium and long-term roadmap for digital twin technology and it is going to prepare systematic strategies in order to perform 5G mobile network-based digital twin public initiative project and to spread service models.
NIPA (National IT Industry Promotion Agency) is going to send out “research services for establishing a medium and long-term road map for digital twin technology” and prepare necessary strategies. The South Korean Government is going to invest $8.24 million (10 billion KRW) in order to carry out “5G-based digital twin public initiative project”. This project focuses on solving social issues through new technologies.
As the number of old facilities has continued to increase recently, there has been an increase in the number of safety issues such as fire and collapse involving old facilities and an increase in sense of uneasiness by the public towards the safety of these facilities. 5G-based digital twin project is going to use 3D modeling such as IoT (Internet of Things) on devices and apply 5G-based digital win technology. It will implement a safety management system for facilities and demonstrate safety of facilities. It is expected that the project will resolve any sense of uneasiness as it will apply 5G and digital twin technologies.

The South Korean Government is going to carry out the project systematically and plan on a medium and long-term roadmap (2021 to 2025) for digital twin technology in order to spread successful cases.
It is going to put together the definition of digital twin technology and the scale of the project. It will analyze global digital twin policies and technologies and market trends and put together a list of major private industries that can also be applied with digital twin technology.
Based on results from its findings, it is going to create an annual plan for the next five years.
The government is going to prepare various plans for commercialization of services paired with 5G-based digital twin demonstration projects and finding and commercialization of new service models after selecting new public and private fields that can be applied with digital twin technology.
“By analyzing technologies, societies, and expectancy effects on economy related to digital twin technology, we are going to present various ways of using digital twin technology.” said NIPA. “We are also going to look for improvements that can be proposed to regulatory sandbox or urgent regulatory improvements.”
