Lotte Card and Fujitsu are planning to operate world’s first ‘Hand Pay self-register’, which allows people to register their biometrics without actually visiting branches’, starting from the 23rd.
It is expected that versatility of biometrics, which have emerged as alternatives of official certificates, will be expanded drastically.
According to information communication and financial industries, Lotte Card and Fujitsu are going to operate self-registers of Hand Pay, which settles payments through veins of palms, on the 23rd.
Hand Pay is a payment system established by Lotte and Fujitsu last year and it is considered as the first example of unmanned payment in South Korea. One has to information of his or her veins of his or her palms in order to make payments in the future by placing his or her palm on a payment terminal. It had drawn interests as it was a bio pay that takes care of verification process and credit card payments with just biometrics.
However, people had to physically bring their IDs to Lotte Card Centers within Lotte Department Stores to register their biometrics.
To solve this problem, Lotte Card and Fujitsu have developed ‘Hand Pay self-register’ so that people can register their biometrics without having to physically visit branches.

Lotte Card is planning to commercialize a new mobile application called ‘Lotte Card Lie’, which creates barcodes for registration purpose after verification process. Registration process can be done after authenticating barcodes through self-registers that are developed in a form of kiosk and registering information of veins.
“We are going to first install these registers at 7-11 Signature Number 1 Store within Lotte World Tower and 7-11 Signature Number 2 within Lotte Insurance Building.” said a representative for Lotte Card. “We are planning to install these registers at all of our subsidiaries such as Lotte Department Store, Lotteria, and Hi-Mart so that our customers can use non-face-to-face authentication and payments.”
It is heard that Lotte Card is also developing a process that allows people to register their biometrics through POS devices located at its franchises.
When self-registers are commercialized, people will be able to use Hand Pay without any limitation.
Along with installation of self-registers, Lotte is also planning to expand its infrastructures towards areas such as waterparks and restaurants with high floating population.
There is also a possibility that this will become a catalyst for South Korea to grow its influence in standardization of biometrics-based payments in the future as this is a first example of using non-face-to-face platform based on biometrics.
