MCNEX is going to be a supplier that will start supplying its dual cameras to Samsung Electronics. Samsung Electronics is going to introduce dual camera modules manufactured by outside companies for the first time for its new Smartphone that is expected to be released at the end of this month. It is expected that Samsung Electronics’ decision to use parts for dual cameras from outside companies will bring opportunities for other industries as well.
According to industries on the 19th, Samsung Electronics chose MCNEX to be the supplier of 13MP camera and 5MP dual camera modules. Samsung Electro-Mechanics, which produced dual cameras for Galaxy Note 8, was also chosen as a supplier. These modules will be used for Galaxy J Plus, which will be released in South-East Asian countries such as Thailand and Malaysia, and Galaxy C8 for Chinese markets. These two products have same specifications and just have different UI (Use Interface) and they will be the second Smartphones by Samsung Electronics followed by Galaxy Note 8 to be equipped with dual cameras.
Dual cameras supplied by MCNEX combine two high-pixel images and improve quality of pictures. 13MP camera has AF (Auto-Focus) function but it does not have OIS (Optical Image Stabilization).
This is the first time MCNEX is supplying its dual camera modules to Samsung Electronics. MCNEX has experiences in supplying dual cameras to Chinese and Japanese Smartphone manufacturers and it has mainly produced front and back camera modules for Samsung Electronics’ low-end and middle-end Smartphones. It is expected that MCNEX will expand its dual camera business on full-scale by supplying its dual cameras to Samsung Electronics.

Increase sales is also expected as a dual camera has 1.5 times more of ASP (Average Sales Price) than a single camera.
“We cannot disclose any information regarding our customers.” said MCNEX regarding its relationship with Samsung Electronics.
It is expected that Samsung Electronics’ decision to use dual cameras for more of its Smartphones will have significant impact on back-end industries. Samsung Electronics is the number one Smartphone manufacturer in the world based on shipment of Smartphones. As amount of orders for dual cameras that were produced by Samsung Electronics or supplied by Samsung Electro-Mechanics has increased greatly, it has brought opportunities for Samsung Electronics’ major partners. Samsung Electronics internally set a goal of having at least 25% of Smartphones that will be released next year to have dual cameras.
According to KTB Investment & Securities Co., Ltd., it is estimated that size of dual camera module markets will increase by 62% from 2017 ($4.6 billion) to 2018 ($7.4 billion). It is also estimated that amount of shipment of Smartphones with dual cameras will increase from 60 million in 2016 to 230 million in 2017 and to 400 million in 2018.
Besides MCNEX, other major partners of Samsung that produce camera modules are also working on development and mass-production of dual cameras.
“When Samsung Electronics starts to use outsourcing of parts for dual cameras on full-scale, it will have positive impact on related industries for awhile.” said a representative in this industry. “Many companies are having very busy days in order to produce dual camera modules.”
