‘Smart Factory’ is receiving attention as a major key driver that will lead manufacturing industries and converged industries during Industry 4.0. As connectivity is expanding and level of importance of data is becoming bigger, level of interests towards security solutions is also getting bigger. Build-up of securities such as coding of network and verification of data’s integrity is required.
According to industries on the 30th, expanded movements of establishment of South Korea’s Smart Factory environment along with release of security solutions related to this environment are going to take place. Earlier this month, Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) prepared a ‘guide to preventing important information of Smart Factory being leaked’ in order to solve problems regarding security issues of Smart Factories and to safely store and use important information.
Smart Factory is an intelligent production facility that converged high-tech ICT (Information Communication Technology) to entire production processes of current manufacturing industries. Not only it introduces automation and expands productivity but it manages production systems in advance and optimizes them by mutually connecting data that it collects and analyzes.
Traditional production facilities were based on closed environment that is mostly cut off from the outside. However by introducing Smart Factories, connectivity is slowly expanding. IoT (Internet of Things), which has placed itself as a connectivity platform in variety of areas, also forms Smart Factories with a name of IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things). This is the reason why invasion and leakage of data that happens in cyber world is seen as a major security threat even in an environment with physical factories.
Penta Security System and MDS Technology from South Korea are going after Smart Factory security markets by joining hands with IoT platform companies.

Penta Security’s ‘Penta Smart Factor Security’ is a solution that was developed by making ‘DAmo’, which is data coding and PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) product, according to Smart Factory. It is composed of endpoint security software (SW) coding module, hardware coding mode, and IoT network security server (Virtual Private Network), and IoT environment PKI certification system.
It issues and manages certificates of authentication for users and devices and prevents any damage in integrity of data of devices. It also prevents any potential attacks and manipulation of data of monitoring system, process management system, and network between gateways per process.
UlalaLab, which is a company that specializes in Smart Factory platform, is going to work with Security Platform that has security solutions based on IoT environment hardware. Currently large plant companies and insulator manufacturers are using such security solutions on site.
MDS Technology, which focuses on embedded solution field, is also going to push for security business for Smart Factory. It has joined hands with Naonworks, which is an industrial control system security company, in Smart Factory security business and industrial standard protocol called OPC UA (Unified Architecture) technology. While MDS Technology provides Smart Factory’s between network and in network solutions, Naonworks combines them with its technical skills in security.
“As parts that were not connected to current IT infrastructures are connected, there is a high chance that there will be leakage of important data and security threats that impeded operation of factories.” said a representative of an industry. “Number of demands for protecting and controlling entire infrastructures of Smart Factories will grow.”
