Standing egg, which is a startup company in semiconductor field, has developed solutions for MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) motion sensors and is going to mass-produce them soon.
Markets for solutions for MEMS motion sensors are dominated by Bosch and ST Micro from Europe and InvenSense from the U.S. So far no South Korean companies have commercialized this technology so far. Although ROHM from Japan is selling solutions for MEMS sensors, Standing egg proclaims that it is Asia’s first company to develop these solutions since ROHM entered this market after merging with Kionix from the U.S.
Standing egg made an announcement on the 5th that it has finished developing solutions for MEMS motion sensors and is preparing to mass-produce them soon and it is currently discussing with China’s huge electronic manufacturers and wearable manufacturers about supplying its sensors. Standing egg, which was established in May of 2013, has been focusing on developing solutions for MEMS motion sensors. “We will be able to make close to $8.55 million (10 billion KRW) in sales in next year.” said CEO Lee Jong-seong of Standing Egg.
Standing egg has 4 technologies that are related to motion sensor.
Its first technology is its technical skills in designing MEMS. Standing egg has developed an acceleration sensor called SGA200 that is based on MEMS and is going to mass-produce this sensor at GF (Global Foundry) shortly. MEMS is a technology that integrates electronic circuits and ultra-small machinery components by applying semiconductor manufacturing process. Currently MEMS sensors are used in Smartphones, tablets, cars, and variety of industrial devices.

Its second technology is its technology that is able to combine MEMS sensor. Standing egg has developed SGO100 that combines a chip with SGA200, terrestrial magnetism sensor, and gyroscope with MCU (Micro-Controller Unit) that processes sensor data. Although it uses outer company’s terrestrial magnetism sensor and gyroscope, it made an announcement that it is going to develop its own terrestrial magnetism sensors and gyroscopes in the future.
Its third technology is its technology that is related to sensor hub. Sensor hub processes sensing information that is frequently delivered instead of AP (Application Processor) and reduces battery use of a device. Although speed of MCU-based sensor hub is slower compared to AP, its electricity consumption is smaller than AP which leads to low battery use even when it performs calculations frequently. Standing egg’s sensor hub called SGH200 is applied with Standing egg’s IBE (Intelligence Boost Engine) and SIC (Sensor Interface Controller) and is able to operate on fast speed with low electricity. According to materials on tests that were presented by Standing egg, speed of SGH200 is 200% faster than its competitors’ sensor hubs and it reduces electricity consumption by 90%.
Its last technology is its algorithm technology that is related to motion sensing. Sensing algorithm technology is a technology that receives sensing information and helps variety of commands to be implemented. If algorithm is accurate, sensors consume lesser electricity and recognize sensing information more accurately even when they perform identical work. Standing egg provides either 6-component or 9-component sensor fusion algorithms. Its customers can manufacture wearables or IoT devices that recognize variety of motion sensing information through these algorithms. Beside these algorithms, Standing egg also has variety of algorithms such as VR, sports tracking and indoor navigation. Standing egg’s motion sensing algorithm is already receiving high praises from related industries and its first sales are also expected to come out from this algorithm.
Although Standing egg is a startup company, it has more than 60 global patents. “We are going to avoid Smartphone markets that are dominated by huge suppliers and grow our company by focusing on IoT markets such as wearable markets and Chinese customers.” said CEO Lee Jong-seong.
CEO Lee Jong-seong had worked as an engineer in semiconductor field for TAMUL Multimedia, Imagis, and Barun Electronics and established Standing egg in 2013.
