People who want to become elementary school teachers in South Korea now need to complete units for software (SW) education for elementary computer subject. Also as ‘information and computer’ subjects are selected as required subjects in middle schools, one must complete related subjects at universities of education or normal universities’ teaching process.
Ministry of Education made an announcement on the 17th that it has prepared ‘Faculty Training Process Improvement Plan’, which has above information as its major points, to establish free semester system and 2015-revised education process.
According to this plan, SW education-related units such as SW basic knowledge, algorithm, programming and others are going to be established for ‘elementary computer’ subject to develop capabilities of future faculties regarding SW subject that is introduced according to 2015-revised education process. SW education and programming are going to become basic requirements of information and computer subjects in middle schools.

Due to introduction of high school vocational education based on revision of education and NCS (National Competency Standard), name of common science and common history will change to integrated science and integrated history respectively and industrial information will change to just industry. Subjects that express qualification of faculty will also change to design and craft, electricity, electronic, and telecommunication, machinery and metal, chemical engineering and fiber, and navigation and organization.
To select teachers with capabilities in classes and evaluations according to free semester system and revised education process, Ministry of Environment is going to work with education offices from each city and province and prepare step-by-step improvement method of employment test for faculties by end of this year. Also it is going to increase current training period for new teachers from 50 hours to 80 hours step by step so that they can quickly adjust to school environment when they are first hired and develop and supply standardized education training process.
“Through Faculty Training Process Improvement Plan, faculty training organizations such as teacher’s college and university of education will operate faculty training process that will lead changes in education and future faculties will have leadership capabilities that can nurture creative and converged people from schools.” said a representative for Ministry of Education.
