Hyper-connected community in which people, things, and data are connected by network, has already approached. SK Telecom and KT showed their latest communication technology such as 5G mobile communication, which is essential for hyper-connected community, at ‘World IT Show (WIS) 2015’.

Two companies focused on informing people about IoT based service. While SK Telecom focused on connecting IoT and platform, KT emphasized on GiGA Topia strategy. They also presented large capacity and ultra-low delay communication technology that are for IoT generation.

SK Telecom presented and demonstrated ‘co-channel duplex transmission’, which allows data transmission and reception to work at the same time from one frequency, for the first in the world. Upgraded version of time-sharing long term evolution (LTE-TDD), which allows data transmission and reception from one frequency with some time in between, co-channel duplex transmission allows transmission and reception to work without any time in between.

Frequency’s efficiency increases two times compared to regular LTE method, which is due to technology that erases signal interference. Demand for frequency increases even more in 5G generation since it has to accommodate mass storage traffic. Due to this reason, global communication businesses are strengthening their research on co-channel duplex transmission.

SK Telecom demonstrated how its robot police organized traffic with its hand signal by applying co-channel duplex transmission technology, which received a lot of attention. SK Telecom is predicting that this technology can be commercialized in a number of years.

KT introduced its TDD-FDD fusion technique called ‘Giga Path’, which is an amalgamation of Wi-Fi and LTE. Giga Path provides speed at 1 Gbps which is 4 times faster than LTE. Also known as LTE-H, Giga Path’s focus is to increase speed by adequately using Wi-Fi from limited frenquency and this technology was first commercialized in the world by KT.

KT also introduced millimeter wave transmission technology that uses more than 30 GHz of high frequency bandwidth, and ‘Massive MIMO’ that increases speed by many antennas.

New and unique services captured many spectators’ eyes at each booth. SK Telecom focused on showing future living conditions through ICT. It presented IoT platform services as Smart Light, Smart Shopper, Smart Credit, and etc. using beacons at tomorrow home, street, store, and outdoor experience centers.

KT installed ‘Entrance Solution’ that uses NFC technology at the exhibition entrance. This technology allows confirmation of entrance fast and easy, and many spectators experienced it on themselves. KT also presented ‘People Counter’ technology that exactly counts guests as they enter and traces their directions.

‘Iris Recognition Payment Solution’ that allows one to make a payment without a credit card by putting one’s eye near a card reader, drew many spectators’ attention. ‘Vtouch Solution’ that can control TVs and indoor temperature by Smartphones, also drew their attention.

These two companies focused on organizing exhibition. To celebrate KTWiz entering major league of Korean Baseball League, KT decorated the exhibition like a baseball stadium by presenting Entrance Solution, 5G, IoT, and Giga Topia topics at home, 1st base, 2nd base, and 3rd base respectively.

SK Telecom decorated the exhibition with the topic ‘A Bridge to Tomorrow’ in its mind. They emphasized on decorating like normal life’s IoT platforms such as home, streets, stores, and outdoor activities so that spectators can personally experience them on the spot. Comedian husband and wife showed up while introducing Smart Home Solution to demonstrate realistically its features.

SK Telecom and KT expressed their desire of coexistence with small businesses by presenting together and counseling them on their future. SK Telecom displayed together with promising startup businesses such as Freddo, Z3 Factory, Nano Lambda, 4D Welcome, and etc. Explanation and counseling also happened for candidates that hope to enter Daejeon Creative Economy Innovative Center.

KT shared 25% of its space at the exhibition with smaller cooperative companies that have innovative technologies and 3 companies that will enter Pankyo Create Economy Innovative Center. It is planning to support Korean small businesses to enter into foreign markets by helping them participate in international events such as WIS or Mobile World Congress (MWC).
