A mid-sized firm was selected as the priority bidder in the public information business with the exception of major company engagement limit. While numerous major companies had engaged, this mid-sized firm took the top spot in the technical evaluation. It is Daebo Communication & Systems that obtained order for a 3.23 billion-dollar-scale demonstration project for the next generation Intelligent Transportation System(ITS).

On the 26th, Daebo Communication & Systems announced their nomination as the priority bidder for the next generation ITS demonstration project that the Korea Expressway Corporation ordered on a scale of 10.8 million dollars. This is a result from competition with many major companies including Posco, ICT, Hyundai AutoEver, etc.

A total of 3.23 billion dollars will be invested into the demonstration project until 2030. For the demonstration project before the main project of the next generation, attention was focused on IT services·software(SW)·equipment companies. This is because technologies applied in the demonstration project have a high probability of becoming the standard of the whole project, and thus have a considerate influence on the selection of the follow-up performing company.

In the performance test carried out before the demonstration project order, a number of companies other than proposal enterprises such as SK Telecom, LG Electronics, Nongshim NDS, and KRTnet Corporation participated as the consortium. Daebo Communication & Systems, being selected as the priority bidder for this demonstration project, was one step ahead of obtaining order for the mega-scale main project.

Daebo Communication & Systems will carry out the demonstration project for two years in roads of a total of 87.8㎞, including expressways, the Dangjin-Daejeon Line, the Honam Line Branch Line, and more. National Highway Line 1 and city streets of Daejeon and Sejong are also included. The Road Side Unit(RSU), incident detector, pedestrian detector, road weather information system, traffic signal controller, etc. will be installed and terminals for vehicles will be supplied.

Unlike the existing ITS, customized services using location information and driving information, detecting in-vehicle incidents, etc. will be implemented. Warnings on speeding and signal violation, communication among vehicles are also available.

Hong, Joong-pyo, Head of Strategic Operations of Daebo Communication & Systems said, “We will carry out thorough technology development and verification, so as to become the standard model for the next generation ITS, considering the main project and foreign market entry.”

Once the demonstration project is completed, a follow-up project applying 2 miilion terminals in 3494㎞ of expressways until 2020 will be carried out. The project budget is 786 million dollars. Until 2025, 9 million terminals will be installed in 11870㎞ of metro area roads, and until 2030, 5 million terminals will be installed in 10332㎞ of small and medium-sized city roads. Budgets for each phase reach 1.3 billion dollars and 1.13 billion dollars.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport analyzed that there will be a 741.3 million-dollar-scale cost savings effect as congestion situations will be reduced by 30~60% once the next generation ITS is introduced. It is expected that as highway capacity increases, the volume of traffic will increase by 13% and accident costs will decrease by 3.3 billion dollars. Effects of new market creations such as the vehicle communication market in 2027 are also expected.

The next generation Intelligent Transportation System(ITS) is a futuristic transportation system in which a moving vehicle exchanges transportation information, etc. in real time with other vehicles or traffic equipments. Drivers can be precognitive of and deal with all sorts of accidents or emergencies ahead through the terminals. The government plans to apply this to every country road including highways, until 2030.
