LG becomes the first to apply new materials like carbon magnesium and lithium magnesium to the case.

The secret to the opening of the age of ‘Gram (lighter than 1㎏)’ in 14-inch notebooks has been disclosed.

According to LGE on January 14, the 14-inch notebook ‘Gram 14’ was the first in the IT industry to apply new materials like carbon magnesium and lithium magnesium to the case. These materials, used in racing cars and airplanes, reduced the weight of the case by more than 150g. An LGE insider said, “To make the 14-inch notebook lighter than 1㎏, we thought we needed an innovative change, and we have been conducting R&D since the end of 2013 to find the right materials.” The Production Engineering Research Institute of LGE took the lead in making these new materials. On top of that, the high-density battery was also improved. Though its size and weight are the same as those of its predecessor, i.e. the 13.3-inch notebook (Gram 13), the battery life has been extended by about 2 hours from 8 hours and 30 minutes to 10 hours and 30 minutes. The battery was made jointly by LGE and LG Chem.

The Gram 14, unveiled at the launching ceremony for the new 2015 PCs, held at the Twin Tower in Yeoeuido, Seoul, had a larger screen than its predecessor, i.e. the 13.3-inch notebook, but its weight (980g) and thickness (13.4㎜) remained the same. It came with the latest Intel 5G CPU ‘Core i7’ and its graphic performance is increased by more than 20% compared to the 4G CPU.

At the launching ceremony, LGE also unveiled the ‘LG curved 21:9 CineView All-in-one PC’ with the 21:9 aspect ratio and curvature. The monitor size is the largest among domestic all-in-one PCs, i.e. 29 inches. It is the first all-in-one PC that has the ‘Home Drive’ function that makes it possible to enjoy the contents stored in the home PC using other devices like tablet PC and smartphone outside the home. As the standalone HDTV tuner is built-in, it is possible to watch TV without turning on the PC at the press of the TV power button. LGE also introduced a variety of PC lineups including the ‘Tab Book Duo’ with increased usability owing to the wireless keyboard and the superlight large-screen 15.6-inch notebook ‘Gram 15.’ “The new LG PC lineups are based on thorough analysis of how customers use their PCs,” said Huh Jae-cheol, managing director, local sales HQ of LGE. “We will lead the PC market with original designs and advanced technologies.” LGE’s Gram 14 was certified by the Korea Record Institute as the lightest notebook among the 14-inch notebooks sold in Korea.
