Gifted Central Asian science students are flocking to UNIST.
According to UNIST (president Cho Moo-je), 141 foreign students are currently studying at UNIST, and 70% of them (98 students) are from Central Asian countries.
49 Kazakhstani students were admitted in the last 4 years, and 17 of them were gifted science students who won medals in various International Mathematical Olympiads. 33 students are from Kyrgyzstan adjacent to Kazakhstan, and 2 of them are International Mathematical Olympiad medalists. 16 students came from Uzbekistan and Mongolia.
Since its establishment in 2009, UNIST has been strategically trying to attract gifted science students from Central Asian countries. The idea was to transform the gifted science students from countries with abundant resources into global scientists and engineers at UNIST and make them Korea-friendly. It was the beginning of the ‘UNIST-initiated K-Science’ in Central Asia.
UNIST paid most attention to Kazakhstan. The school held the Admissions Information Session in Kazakhstan every year, and invited the Kazakhstani national representatives for the International Olympiad to UNIST and helped them prepare for the competition. In 2012, UNIST entered into an agreement with a Kazakhstani educational foundation and laid the foundation for inducing outstanding science and engineering students to come to Korea. Kazakhstani students enrolled in UNIST are the most gifted science students in the top 0.1% in their country.
Next, UNIST knocked on the door of Kyrgyzstan through a local gifted education institution. Last year 33 Kyrgyzstani students were admitted to UNIST, and recently the school entered into an agreement with Kyrgyzstan for expansion of exchange.
A Uzbekistani student, who received a master’s degree at UNIST, is working as a professor in Uzbekistan, and a Mongolian student is now working in the Bank of Mongolia.
Having heard this story, Kim Gi-hyeon, the mayor of Ulsan, visited UNIST on November 25, and met with 24 foreign students. He encouraged them by saying, “I hope that you will become world-best scientists and bring a lot of prestige to your country.”
“Foreign gifted science students, who studied at UNIST, are returning to their countries, contributing to the economic development of their father land, and becoming the key men in their own countries,” said President Cho Moo-je. “Their relationship with UNIST will greatly contribute to the economic diplomacy of Korea, e.g. securing resources.”

UNIST발 `과학한류 확산’…중앙아시아 국가 UNIST에 유학 러시

중앙아시아 과학영재들이 UNIST로 몰려오고 있다.
UNIST(총장 조무제)에 따르면 현재 UNIST에서 유학 중인 외국 학생은 141명으로 이 중에서 70%인 98명이 중앙아시아 국가 출신이다.
카자흐스탄 출신은 최근 4년간 49명이나 입학했고 이중 17명이 각종 국제과학올림피아드에서 메달을 딴 과학영재다. 인접 키르기스스탄 출신 유학생은 국제과학올림피아드 메달리스트 2명을 포함해 33명이다. 우즈베키스탄과 몽골 출신 유학생도 16명이나 된다.
UNIST는 2009년 개교 직후부터 중앙아시아 과학영재 영입을 전략적으로 추진했다. 자원 부국의 과학영재를 UNIST에서 글로벌 과학기술인재로 양성해 해당 국가내 친한파로 만든다는 구상이었다. 현재 중앙아시아에 불고 있는 ‘UNIST 발 과학한류’의 시작이었던 셈이다.
가장 심혈을 기울인 곳은 카자흐스탄이다. UNIST는 매년 카자흐스탄 현지에서 입학설명회를 개최했고, 카자흐스탄 국제올림피아드 대표팀을 UNIST로 초청해 대회 준비 캠프를 지원했다. 2012년에는 카자흐스탄 교육재단과 협약을 맺고 우수 이공계 학생 유치의 발판을 마련했다. UNIST에 재학 중인 카자흐스탄 학생은 자국에서 상위 0.1% 드는 최우수 과학영재들이다.
이어 키르기스스탄에는 현지 영재교육기관을 통해 문을 두드렸다. 지난해 키르기스스탄 과학영재 33명이 UNIST에 입학했고, 최근에는 교류 확대를 위한 협약도 맺었다.
UNIST에서 석사 학위를 받은 우즈베키스탄 출신 유학생은 자국에서 교수로 활동하고, 몽골 출신 유학생 한 명은 몽골 중앙은행에서 일하고 있다.
이 같은 소식을 접한 김기현 울산시장은 25일 UNIST를 찾아 외국인 유학생 24명과 간담회를 갖고 “세계 최고의 과학자가 돼 모국의 명예를 드높이길 바란다”고 격려했다.
조무제 총장은 “UNIST가 양성한 해외 과학영재들이 모국으로 돌아가 경제발전에 기여하며 그 나라의 핵심 인재로 자리잡고 있다”며 “이들이 UNIST와 맺은 인연은 향후 우리나라의 자원 확보 등 경제 외교에 크게 기여하게 될 것”이라고 말했다.
