Samsung Group has set out to establish a venture business ecosystem of a virtuous cycle. This was planned in line with Park Geun-hye’s Administration’s will for creative economy activation. Samsung will execute Silicon Valley type venture business investments by growth stage as the first in Korea, and thus will help venture companies with innovative ideas grow into global enterprises.

According to Samsung Group on the 4th, it will hold ‘Samsung Venture Partners’ Day’ event in Daegu on the 21st in order to mark the beginning of its endeavor for this plan. This is a follow-up event of the ‘Samsung Group ? Daegu City Creative Economy Innovation Center’ establishment event held in Daegu in September with President Park attending.

For venture businesses selected through this program, Samsung will provide funding support by each stage of business incubation, growth and maturation. In addition, it will help companies with creative ideas grow into global enterprises by applying the independently developed ‘Creative Lab (C-lab) Accelerating Program.’

C-lab Accelerating, which Samsung Electronics has been operating since 2011, is a program helping employees producing innovative ideas realize their ideas. This program is also forecast to produce synergy with Open Innovation Center (OIC), which the company is operating in the U.S. Located in Silicon Valley, OIC is an organization in charge of venture business investment, M&A and incubating. At present, Samsung is operating incubating centers in Silicon Valley and New York in the western and the eastern parts of the U.S. respectively.

On the Venture Partners’ Day, companies that have passed a document screening receive presentation and investment review by Samsung’s experts. The review is carried out on businesses are from Internet of things (IoT), ICT, parts and materials, display, contents and fashion fields. It targets innovative small venture companies that are located in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do areas or have a plan to start business in these areas.

“In Korea, investment and support by growth stage will be carried out first.”

These are the words from an insider of Samsung Venture Investment Corporation, which is hosting the event. Investment by growth stage is like the ‘Achilles’ hill’ for Korea’s venture business ecosystem. Although the government attempted at phased investment, there were difficulties in support to college graduates’ application to small and medium businesses. At the same time, it was not easy for the private sector to execute extensive investments due to limitations in venture business funding. Samsung’s intention is to establish a Silicon Valley type venture investment environment in Korea by overcoming such limitations.

Samsung will execute a three-stage investment on startups in the initial idea conception stage, according to sources. Following a support for KRW 30 million ? 300 million (stage 1), the company will execute an additional investment under the limit of KRW 200 million (stage) within one year. Up to stage 2, an investment to a scale of KRW 20 billion will be executed through venture fund (C-fund) established jointly by Samsung and Daegu Metropolitan City. Venture businesses to receive stage 3 support become Samsung’s strategic partners. For these companies, Samsung will provide a funding support so as to help the companies establish a mass-production system or take over other companies with a goal to increase their scale. For this, the investment will be executed using a strategic fund of approximately KRW 1.3 trillion established and managed by Samsung Venture Investment Corporation together with Samsung Group affiliates rather than C-fund. There are no investment limits set for this stage. This is a Silicon Valley type investment system. For example, Facebook received investment in ten rounds from the time of business incubation to stock market listing. In addition, Twitter and Zynga attracted funds eight times.

Samsung’s attempt as such also holds great significance that it strengthens the backbone of Korean economy. It prevents companies from falling into the ‘death valley’ where, once companies grow to a certain level, they experience limitations in financing for the enormous amounts of fund required.

Samsung will also perform actively as a partner for venture businesses to assist them in their growth. As angle investors or venture capitals in the U.S. provide management and investment consulting services and assistance in the securing of human resources, Samsung Group will help venture businesses make use of its excellent network. A Samsung insider emphasized, “As of the title of this event, we will literally become a partner for venture businesses so as to help them achieve success in the future.”
