Global enterprises, such as Google, met with Korea’s IT startups and small companies and gauged the investment possibilities by showing a high level of interest in the businesses.
The five global companies, Google, Intel, Ericsson, Siemens and Applied Materials, attended ‘Meet the Global Companies 2014’ organized by Small and Medium Business Administration (SMBA) and Small & Medium Business Corporation and held on the 23rd in Conrad Seoul. The companies introduced their global venture investment strategies as well as corporate M&A and latest technological trends, and thus drew attention of Korean startups and small-scale companies.
Global companies, all alike, evaluated that many of Korea’s startups and small-scale companies are equipped with excellent technological power and have large growth potentials.
“We recognize the high standard of Korean startups so that we opened Google Campus in Seoul as the third in the world following London and Israel and the first in Asia,” said a Google insider. “The fact that we opened Google Campus in Korea means that we are interested in the Korean market.”
“Google’s M&A target is robotics.” He added, “This is a field where Korean small companies with strengths in semiconductor, display and smart devices have a competitive edge.”
Siemens Venture Capital Vice President Gerd Goette introduced his company, “Traditionally, Siemens has strength in home appliances. However, recently, we are implementing a diversity strategy to give attention to various industrial fields in order to rapidly adapt to environmental changes, such as aging population and climate changes.”
“From this standpoint, we have a high level of interest in Korean startups, which have strengths in all areas including software and hardware,” continued Vice President Goette. “We will continuously pay attention to M&A with and investment in Korea’s small companies in order to achieve open innovation and to promote sustainable innovation.”
Ericsson Vice President Albert Kim said, “We recognize the strengths of Korea’s innovative startups as much as those in Germany and Europe.” He criticized, however, “Korean secondary market being limited is a problem.”
In Korea, 29 small and medium-scale companies and venture businesses with large growth potentials embarked on corporate publicity (IR) targeting global companies. These companies searched for the methods of strategic affiliation, M&A and investment induction through one-on-one in-depth consultation with global enterprises.
Global companies expressed an intention to cooperate with Korean businesses in various fields. They also announced a plan to implement follow-up measures promptly in relation to the outcomes of discussion and consultation in this event.
A Korean startup insider said, “It is difficult to meet with global enterprises. So, apart from our outcomes today, this event was meaningful as it provided us with an opportunity to talk with global companies.” He added, “I hope we will be able to have more opportunities like this.”
“Global enterprise, such as Alibaba, Yozma Group and Google, are positively evaluating the excellent technological power of Korea’s startups and venture businesses, and thus are expressing intentions for investment,” said SMBA Administrator Han Jeong-hwa. “We will create an environment to accelerate cooperation with global enterprises by extensively fostering startups and venture businesses as the leaders of Korea’s creative economy.”

구글?인텔 등 글로벌기업, 한국 스타트업에 반했다

구글 등 글로벌 기업이 한국의 정보기술(IT) 스타트업?중소기업과 만나 높은 관심을 보이며 투자 여부 등을 타진했다.
구글, 인텔, 에릭슨, 지멘스, 어플라이드머티리얼즈 5개 글로벌 기업이 23일 중소기업청, 중소기업진흥공단 주최로 서울 콘래드 호텔에서 열린 ‘2014 글로벌 기업과의 만남의 장’에서 글로벌 벤처투자 전략, 기업간인수합병(M&A), 최신 기술 트렌드 등을 소개해 한국 스타트업과 벤처기업의 비상한 관심을 모았다.
글로벌 기업은 한결같이 한국의 많은 스타트업?중소기업이 우수한 기술력을 갖추고 있고, 성장 잠재력도 훌륭하다는 입장을 표명했다.
구글 관계자는 “런던, 이스라엘에 이어 전 세계 세 번째, 아시아에서 첫 번째로 서울에 구글 캠퍼스를 개설할 정도로 한국 스타트업의 수준을 인정한다”며 “한국에서 구글이 캠퍼스를 것은 한국 시장에 대한 구글의 관심을 표명한 것”이라고 말했다.
이어 “구글의 M&A 타겟은 로보틱스”라며 “반도체, 디스플레이, 스마트기기 등에서 강점이 있는 한국 중소기업이 경쟁력있는 분야”라고 소개했다.
게르드 괴테 지멘스 벤처캐피털 부사장은 “지멘스는 전통적으로 가전에 강점이 있지만, 최근 고령화 및 기후변화 등 변화된 환경에 빠르게 적응하기 위해 다양한 산업에 관심을 두는 다양성의 전략을 구사하고 있다”고 소개했다.
괴테 부사장은 “이러한 관점에서 소프트웨어 및 하드웨어 등 모든 분야에서 강점을 갖고 있는 한국 스타트업에 관심이 많다”며 “오픈 이노베이션과 항구적인 혁신 추구를 위해 한국 중소기업에 M&A와 투자에 지속적인 관심을 갖겠다”고 말했다.
앨버트 김 에릭슨 부대표는 “독일, 유럽만큼 한국의 혁신적인 스타트업의 강점을 인정한다”며 “다만, 한국의 회수 시장이 제한적인 것은 문제”라고 지적했다.
한국측에서는 성장 가능성이 큰 국내 중소?벤처기업 29곳이 글로벌 기업을 대상으로 기업 홍보(IR)에 나섰다. 일대일 심층 상담을 통해 전략적 제휴, M&A, 투자 유치 등을 모색했다.
글로벌 기업들은 한국 기업들과 다양한 분야에서 협력하기를 희망했다. 이번 행사에서 논의?협의된 결과물은 신속하게 후속 조치에 나서겠다는 입장도 밝혔다.
한국의 창업?벤처기업은 “글로벌 기업과는 만남 자체가 힘들기 때문에 오늘 행사의 성과를 떠나서 만남 자체만으로도 큰 의미가 있다”며 “이런 기회가 더욱 확대되길 바란다”고 희망했다.
한정화 중기청장은 “최근 구글을 비롯해 알리바바, 요즈마그룹 등 글로벌 기업이 한국 창업?벤처기업의 우수한 기술력을 긍정적으로 평가하고 투자계획을 속속 밝히고 있다”며 “창업?벤처기업을 창조경제 주역으로 집중 육성해 더 많은 글로벌 기업과 협력할 수 있는 환경을 조성해 나갈 것”이라고 말했다.
