Samsung Electronics and Apple have been suffering headaches due to the low production yield of fingerprint recognition sensor chip. The two companies were to apply fingerprint recognition to their flagship smartphones to be launched in the second half, but they have to abandon the plan due to the unstable sensor chip supply. According to a report, Samsung Electronics decided to drop the fingerprint recognition function at the final development stage of Galaxy Note 3, due to unstable supply of sensor chip. Apple is also highly likely to postpone the launch of iPhone S5 due to a technological issue related to fingerprint recognition function. Both companies have made efforts to apply fingerprint recognition technology to their new smartphones. Apple acquired Authen Tech and Samsung have collaborated with Validity Sensors. However, both of the sensor chip producers could not supply the sensor chips stably. Nor, is it difficult for them to find another sensor chip suppliers, because there are not many smartphone sensor chip suppliers. At the moment, smartphone manufactures have to depend on chip makers, since they are at the initial stage of introducing bio-recognition technology to smartphones. Samsung and Apple are known to have started to develop bio-recognition algorithm, to reduce such dependence and realize Application Processor(AP) and bio-recognition on a single chip. However, they will have to focus on stabilizing the production yield of sensor chip and developing packaging technology for some time.
스마트폰 보안 해결사 `지문인식` 기능 채택 지연
삼성전자와 애플이 낮은 지문인식 센서칩 생산 수율 탓에 골머리를 앓고 있다. 당초 두 회사는 하반기 플래그십 스마트폰에 지문인식을 기능을 적용할 계획이었지만, 센서칩 공급이 불안정해지면서 일정 자체가 불투명한 상황이다. 스마트폰 시장의 양강업체 삼성전자와 애플, 두 회사 중 누가 먼저 지문인식 기능을 구현해 프리미엄 시장 주도권을 쥘지 주목된다.23일 업계에 따르면 삼성전자가 갤럭시노트3에 지문인식 기능을 최종 개발 단계에서 뺀 것으로 알려졌다. 당초 삼성전자는 애플 아이폰5S에 대응해 갤럭시노트3에 지문인식 기능을 채택할 계획이었다. 상반기 갤럭시S4 판매 부진 충격을 딛고 갤럭시노트3로 프리미엄 스마트폰 시장 주도권을 확보하기 위해서다. 그러나 센서칩 공급 문제로 일정을 늦출 수밖에 없는 실정이다.
업계 관계자는 “지문인식 기술을 스마트폰에 적용하기 위해서는 생각보다 까다로운 기술 장벽이 존재한다”며 “현재로서는 갤럭시S4·갤럭시노트3의 파생 모델이나 내년 출시할 갤럭시S5에 지문인식 기술이 적용될 가능성이 높다”고 말했다.
애플도 아이폰5S에 지문인식 기능을 채택했지만 기술 문제로 출시 일정이 지연될 가능성이 높다.
두 회사의 발목을 잡은 것은 지문인식 기능을 구현하는 센서칩이다. 애플은 지난해 센서 칩 업체 어센텍을 인수한 후 지문인식 기능을 스마트폰에 적용하기 위해 연구개발에 집중해왔다. 삼성전자는 이에 대응해 미국 밸리디티와 협력해 지문인식 센서칩을 공급받기로 했다.
그러나 어센텍과 밸리디티 두 회사 모두 생산 수율이 저조해 안정적으로 지문인식 칩을 공급할 수 없는 상황이다. 삼성전자와 애플로서는 대체할 만한 센서칩 업체를 찾기도 쉽지 않다. 세계적으로 스마트폰용 지문인식 센서 칩을 공급할 수 있는 업체는 미국 어센텍·밸리디티, 스웨덴 FPC 세 곳 정도밖에 없기 때문이다.
반도체 한 전문가는 “칩 설계 단계에서 오류가 발생한 것으로 추정된다”며 “스마트폰 업체로서는 빨리 설계 오류를 찾아내거나 새로운 칩 업체를 발굴할 수밖에 없을 것”이라고 말했다.
스마트폰에 생체인식 기술이 막 도입되는 시점이어서 칩 업체 의존도가 절대적으로 높다. 삼성전자와 애플은 생체인식 알고리즘 개발을 위한 연구개발에 착수한 것으로 알려졌다. 센서칩 회사 의존도를 낮추고, 향후 애플리케이션프로세서(AP)와 생체인식 센서칩을 원칩화하려는 움직임으로 풀이된다. 그러나 당분간은 센서칩 생산 수율 안정화와 패키징 기술 확보에 집중할 것으로 보인다.
